The new Nexus phone is the first to be developed with Samsung – the first Nexus model was developed with rival HTC.
The phone will be sold exclusively in the UK by Carphone Warehouse and its Best Buy UK joint venture with US technology retailer Best Buy, with a limited release before Christmas.
Both retailers will offer Nexus S for free from £35/month or SIM free from £549.95.
Nexus S phones will make greater use of "Near Field Communication" technology, which allows users to interact with various marketing displays, such as movie posters.
Andy Rubin, vice president for engineering at Google, said: "As the lead device for Gingerbread, Nexus S combines great hardware with great software to provide users with a fast and powerful mobile experience.
Samsung last month launched its tablet-style device the Tab, which also runs the Android operating system.
