Speaking today (24 June) at the Fortune event 'The Most Powerful Women', Minnick urged women to think about different ways to attain a board-level appointment.
"Boards need speciality skills, they don't just need CEOs," said Minnick who is now a partner on private equity firm Lion Capital.
Minnick identified "digital experience, e-commerce and social media" as skills that boards were seeking.
She said there was a "fertile opportunity", especially for joining traditional bricks and mortar retail brands such as Target which is one of the boards on which she sits.
"We are desperate for social media experience," she added.
