Insiders say the move is being discussed at France Telecom's Paris headquarters and will be the last stage of establishing Orange as its global communications brand.
This was kick-started by the telecom giant's confirmation earlier this year that its internet service provider, Wanadoo, will be merged into Orange next summer.
France Telecom is desperate to establish itself as an international communications player and believes that the Orange brand will resonate much better with consumers around the world.
It is expected that Orange will house its global mobile, internet and fixed-line interests, while France Telecom will be the holding company.
Earlier this year, France Telecom held a beauty parade of advertising agencies to pitch for the combined Orange/Wanadoo business. Although no agencies were appointed, there is speculation that it is set to appoint TBWA\Europe as Orange's international agency. Orange and TBWA have denied this.
France Telecom was unavailable to comment on its plans for the Orange brand.
