Much has been done to raise the standards and effectiveness of
customer magazines over the past few years through harnessing the skills
of specialist professional publishers.
A couple of recent announcements suggest that clients are taking these
lessons on board, and may be applying them to that other major task:
Summerhouse Publishing, for example, already produces a four-language
customer magazine, Panorama, for GEC Alsthom. Recently, the company was
invited to Paris to pitch against two local agencies for the contracts
for an internal management magazine and internal newsletter.
It won both, a coup which may spur it on to open a Paris office.
Meanwhile, BLA, which already publishes three titles for NatWest, has
picked up a fourth, a staff magazine called The Business.
Bi-monthly, it has a circulation of 40,000. Karen Fletcher, who began
her journalistic career on Marketing and became deputy editor of our
sister publication Marketing Direct, has been recruited as the new
The Publishing Team has set up a new division, provisionally called The
Communications Team, specialising in corporate and internal
communications. Peter Law, who worked in this area at Citigate, has
joined as publisher.
