The UK’s first ’communications carriage’ launches this week
following a tie-up between Cellnet and Virgin Trains. Commuters on four
peak-time journeys on the London-Manchester route will be able to send
e-mails, faxes, make calls and recharge phones free of charge on
equipment in the carriage. A special booster will ensure clearer
signals. The trial, which may be rolled out permanently, follows a BT
survey which showed that 49% of business travellers wanted to see
’working wagons’ in order to work on the move.
