MARKETING MIX: I’ll name that brand in one !

Christmas Day 1956 - a decade before the pack we feature here was on supermarket shelves - saw the launch of a now-famous TV campaign for Brand X. Today, 41 years later and still going strong, it has become the longest-running advertising on the box - indeed, you’ll probably see it as you’re slumped in front of the TV this yuletide. The heritage of the mystery brand dates back much further, to a small shop in Manchester in 1869. Brand X itself, however, was not launched until 1930, when it was sold as an aid to digestion and known as Pre Gestee. Enough is drunk every day to fill six Olympic-sized swimming pools! Its digestive qualities are now all but forgotten, but it remains brand leader - nothing to do with pyramid selling, rather its blend of 28 different varieties. If you can put a name to the brand, hit the fax machine and dial 0171 413 4504.

If your correct entry is picked out, you’ll win a bottle of champagne to

enjoy over Christmas.

A bottle of bubbly goes to Gill Wells of Trebor Bassett for identifying

Kellogg’s All-Bran as last week’s mystery brand
