Direct launch tactics
London News Radio’s 24-hour news radio station News Direct 97.3FM is to
launch a pounds 1m advertising campaign in January to promote the new
‘Tune in, Tune out’ news format. The campaign, through Abbott Mead
Vickers BBDO and McBains, will use posters, buses and press.
Cinema hires Young
Cinema Media, the Carlton Communications-owned cinema advertising
company, has appointed Nicola Young as marketing manager. She was
previously at Jazz FM.
Chrysalis loses out
The Chrysalis Group has announced a pre-tax loss of pounds 5.36m, which
it is says is in line with forecasts as it has invested pounds 6.7m in
start up radio stations and record labels and has lost pounds 1.9m
through closing its feature film division. Its three radio stations,
Heart FM in London and the Midlands and Galaxy in Bristol, are
National Geographic TV
National Geographic Television and NBC have joined forces to develop the
National Geographic Channel. It will launch next year and will target
Europe, Asia and Latin America.
A Kiss goodbye
Kiss FM’s marketing director Malcolm Cox has left to become marketing
director of Emap Radio, which owns the Kiss brand.
Netting the men
Instant Access Publishing is launching a new Internet publication for
men. It will be a magazine and an interactive CD-ROM that Instant says
will be the first magazine to break the taboo of sex on the Internet.
Talk appoints Kelly
Talk Radio has appointed GMTV presenter Lorraine Kelly to host its
weekday lunchtime programme, the slot left vacant by agony aunt Anna
Raeburn. Kelly will cover health and lifestyle subjects with a phone-in
slot with agony uncle Phillip Hodson.
New director for CNN
Ross Portugeis has been appointed managing director of Turner
International Network Sales, to oversee the network distribution of CNN
International, CNN Text, CNN Radio, TNT and The Cartoon Network.
Radio sales house MSM has introduced three new packages for advertisers.

Independent in Scotland
The Independent Radio Group has appointed Ian Sewell as director of its
Scottish operations. He joins from Radio Forth.
London radio stations have been running charity appeals in the run-up to
Christmas. Kiss FM has launched an appeal to build a hostel for homeless
teenagers in London. And Heart FM has run a campaign for the World
Vision’s Child Sponsorship Scheme.
