Safeway marketing director Roger Partington has been promoted to the

board in a new role to look after customer service. He will be replaced

by his number two, Roger Ramsden.

Kodak has made European marketing manager Joe Bogardus redundant as part

of a worldwide cost-cutting drive. European marketing will now be headed

by Mike Bushell.

Allied Bakeries launches Burgen, the bread brand which claims to relieve

menopausal symptoms, this weekend with a pounds 250,000 press campaign

through Publicis.

Budweiser is thought to be the front-runner in securing a deal for the

sponsorship of ITV’s coverage of the World Cup, to be staged in France

next year.

Sainsbury’s has appointed 20/20 design and strategy consultants to work

on its brand identity and the design of its stores. Rodney Fitch and

Conran Design also pitched for the account.

Hewlett-Packard breaks a pounds 20m pan-European TV campaign for its

printers through Saatchi & Saatchi this week.

The Commission for New Towns is believed to have put its pounds 1.6m

advertising account up for pitch. It is currently handled by the Osprey


The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s ’Trends Survey’ of 200 senior

marketing managers indicates that the overall trend in marketing

expenditure over the next year will be downward. Total growth in

expenditure on marketing projects is expected to be 3.6% in 1998

compared with 4.6% this year.

British Car Auctions has handed its advertising account to J Walter

Thompson following a three-way pitch against M&C Saatchi and Team

Saatchi. The account is rumoured to be worth around pounds 2m.

Thomson is to launch an own-label car hire brand in conjunction with

car-hire specialist Holiday Autos. The brand will sell alongside Hertz

Cars in Thomson’s 1998/99 Winter brochures but will offer a 10%


Adshel has won the contract to supply Cardiff City Council with 500 bus

shelters in return for advertising space. The contractor is expected to

receive between pounds 15m and pounds 20m in ad revenue over the 15-year

duration of the contract.

New cosmetics chain Virgin Vie breaks a tongue-in-cheek cinema ad

through Quiet Storm this Friday.
