This week’s mystery company was founded after a Government White Paper
and the subsequent passing of the Act that privatised its industry in
England and Wales in 1989.
Based in White Rose country, the former public utility was bought for
pounds 1.5bn in February 1997 by a holding company jointly owned by two
US-based groups, American Electric Power and New Century Energies.
In December 1997, the company restructured itself into three
self-sufficient businesses, generation, distribution and supply, ahead
of its market becoming fully open to competition in 1998.
In 1997 it spent nearly pounds 600,000 on advertising its services. In
September this year, the company began running a campaign through the
agency Rapier, promoting loyalty to its two million customers
