The role, a new one for the company, includes global responsibilities. Palmer will be responsible for establishing a long-term marketing investment strategy for brands including Huggies and Andrex.
Based at Kimberly-Clark's headquarters in Texas, he will report to chairman and chief executive Thomas Falk. It is understood that Kimberly-Clark's European heads of marketing will report to Palmer.
Kimberly-Clark's UK advertising is handled by JWT, while MindShare is responsible for its media. Neither will be affected by the appointment for the time being, according to a spokeswoman.
Before joining Kellogg in 2002, Palmer worked in Coca-Cola's Minute Maid division in the US.
Tim Mobsby, Kellogg's president of Europe, will lead the company's UK board until Palmer's replacement is appointed.
