Thomas Cook, the travel and financial services group, has launched a new

Web site offering customer information and a currency converter. The

site will also carry details of all Thomas Cook promotions and special

offers. The site is on http://www.thomascook.com



Allied expansion



Allied Domecq’s pub brand, Firkin, has appointed below-the-line agency

PDP to work on point-of-sale, sales promotion and direct marketing for

its new chain of Firkin off-licences. Five new off-licences are planned

before Christmas, focusing on a wide range of beers to target the

younger end of the market.



Virgin adds Spice



Virgin Records has created a new Internet site with pop group The Spice

Girls as its subject. The site uses new technology from Quark called

Immedia, which delivers better sounds and images and allows more

interactivity than other Web sites. It can be accessed on

Drink sales cool off



The hot drinks sector is growing much more slowly than the soft drinks

market, according to research from Euromonitor. Sales of hot drinks grew

4.4% between 1991 and 1995, compared with 17% for soft drinks between

1990 and 1994. Food drinks, such as hot chocolate and malted milk, are

forecast to outperform other hot drinks by 2000.



Popai in Euro study



The Point of Purchase Advertising Institute Europe is planning its first

major study of the buying habits of European shoppers to determine how

buyers make their decisions and how they are influenced by point-of-

purchase material. Popai will be looking for European brands and

retailers to sponsor specific product categories.



GUS goes shopping



Great Universal Stores has bought Experian, one of the US’s largest

suppliers of credit, marketing and property information, for pounds

1.04bn. Experian will merge with GUS’s target marketing company, CCN, to

create a new force in the information services market.



Devil of a job



Design Audit has been commissioned by Lamborghini GB to design a

brochure focusing on its new Diablo series.



O&M exit



KLP has hired O&M Direct’s Hugh Allspaugh as a board director. He

previously ran American Express at the direct marketing firm.
