Unilever has acquired Bestfoods, the US food group, for dollars
20.3bn (pounds 13.5bn). Bestfood’s brands include Knorr soups and
Hellmann’s mayonnaise. Unilever is also taking on dollars 4bn (pounds
2.7bn) of Bestfood’s debts.
Capital Radio has promoted Sally Oldham, formerly managing director of
group radio, to the newly created board-level position of strategy and
development director. She will develop new growth opportunities in the

Sega and Motorola are to launch cellular phone handsets that will enable

incorporated into Motorola’s next range of mobile handsets.
Surfmiles, an online rewards programme, has appointed Carat as media
agency for its pounds 3m account. Surfmiles allows internet users to
gain points, which can be exchanged for cash by shopping at specific
WPP chief executive Martin Sorrell has indicated that cost savings from
WPP’s dollars 4.7bn (pounds 3.1bn) acquisition of Young & Rubicam could
well outstrip initial expectations. He said that the predicted
first-year savings of dollars 30m (pounds 20m) were ’conservative’.
Robbie Williams’ new charitable trust, Give It Sum, which is being run
by Comic Relief, has appointed The Team to develop its brand identity.
Last year The Team reviewed the Comic Relief brand identity to provide a
framework to support sub-brands. Williams is to donate all the proceeds
from his sponsorship deal for Pepsi’s forthcoming ’Ask For More Summer’
campaign to the trust, which will tackle poverty and social issues.
Ballygowan Pure Irish Water is to sponsor London’s major Irish music
event, The Fleadh, which takes place in Finsbury Park on June 10. As
headline sponsor Ballygowan will benefit from media coverage in national
press, radio, web sites, consumer titles and broadcasts on terrestrial
and digital TV channels.
Cadbury is to sponsor The Animal Collection, a children’s wildlife
showcase of four programmes on ITV, with its Cadbury Land Yowie brand.
The deal, which runs from June 12 to December, was co-ordinated by Carat
and Carlton Television.
The Broadcasting Standards Commission and the Radio Authority have
announced an agreement to extend co-operation, particularly in handling
complaints. The move is intended to achieve consistency in judgments and
Virgin has confirmed plans to launch its Virgin Energy brand in the next
few months, unveiling a tie-up with London Electricity. Fallon and Leo
Burnett are currently competing to handle advertising for the brand.
The Advertising Association has published a Green Paper outlining
