Royal Mail's monopoly on business post is being seriously
challenged for the first time following the announcement that Business
Post subsidiary UK Mail has been granted a licence to provide business
Independent regulator Postcomm has issued the licence, which is
effective from April 2002 and is initially for one year.
UK Mail will collect mail from business customers in a number of
locations, including London, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and
Manchester. It will transport the mail to the relevant delivery office
where Royal Mail will take over the final sorting and local
Guy Buswell, sales and marketing director at Business Post, said it aims
to work with Royal Mail, not against it: "We are trying to combine the
strengths of Consignia and Business Post, giving customers a choice in
who collects their mail."
