Guinness will be the last brand to advertise on ITV this millennium
and Bell’s Whisky the first in the next, following a deal between Diageo
Diageo beat off rivals, such as IBM, Abbey National and BT, to buy the
entire last break of 1999 and the first break in the new millennium to
showcase its alcoholic drinks range.
The Guinness ’snail’ ad, through Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, featuring the
copyline, ’Good things come to those who wait’, will be the last
advertisement shown on ITV before the midnight bells.
A few minutes later, the first ad of the new millennium will be Bell’s
whisky with the line, ’Eight years well spent’.
Other Diageo brands in the millennial showcase will be Smirnoff (Red and
Ice), Archers, Baileys and Malibu.
