Careers: Company CV - Royal & SunAlliance

Company facts

Company facts

Royal & Sun Alliance was created in July 1996 following the merger of

two of the UK’s biggest insurance companies, Royal Insurance and Sun

Its core work is in the transaction of insurance business and the

provision of related financial services in the UK and overseas. It is

one of the world’s top ten international general insurers by premium

income, and the UK’s largest general insurer. It is also one of the UK’s

top ten fund managers.

The group is organised into three time-zone based regions: the Americas,

Asia Pacific, and Europe. Business within each region is segmented into

commercial and personal financial services.

In April 1998, the Chinese government granted Royal & Sun Alliance a

licence to sell insurance, marking the first time in 50 years that a UK

insurer was allowed to sell policies in China.

Last November, it completed the acquisition of Orion Capital

Corporation, one of the top property insurers in the US, and merged it

into a wholly owned US subsidiary.

In October, the group launched a marketing campaign designed to draw new

customers to its investment trusts. The drive, through McCann-Erickson,

promoted its FTSE 100 ISA, and featured responsive press ads, inserts

and targeted mailers.

According to MMS, the company’s top spending brand in the year to

September 1999 was Royal & Sun Alliance ISA, with pounds 870,558.
