Make a stand
Q: I have to set next year's budget for exhibition activity and would like some pointers for costing stands.
A: As a rough guide, PCI LiveDesign suggests you allow about pounds 150-pounds 400 per square metre for a modular stand, and pounds 50-pounds 80 per square metre for a shell scheme.
For a custom stand it says around pounds 300-pounds 450 per square metre will cover the basic build. However, you will need to factor in the cost of other items such as the design and content development, and promotional activities, which might bring the total up to pounds 600-pounds 900 per square metre.
The lower figures would tend to apply where the objectives are largely functional, but you will be looking more toward the upper end if you want to impress.

ACROSS THE POND
Q: Is there a travel company that provides short breaks in New York, flying from Glasgow or Edinburgh?
A: The Destination Group has a service called New York Hotels 4 Less, which provides two- or three-night weekend packages from the UK for about pounds 400-pounds 500 per person. Most fly from Heathrow, but there is also one from Glasgow on Continental Airlines.
Typically, you would leave on Friday morning and arrive a little later New York time. That gives you two-and-a-half days until Sunday evening when you board the return flight, arriving back around 9am.
A two-night stay at the four-star President Hotel in New York, flying from Heathrow, costs pounds 425 per person, including the flight and airport tax. You will need to add about pounds 60 for Glasgow flights. The company can arrange transfer from the airport, but says it is quicker to get a taxi and no more expensive.
Bookings for January and February are heavy, since many customers are making up for a shortage of availability over Christmas. March is less frenetic, but avoid St Patrick's Day on February 17.

IT SPECIAL LISTS
Q: Can you suggest the name of a company that provides lists of companies specialising in IT and internet services?
A: Publishers of computer titles have subscriber lists that they will often make available on a rental basis. One is Haymarket Publishing, which produces IT Training and Internet Business. It has details of about 10,000 companies on its database.
Haymarket Direct provides lists that can include selections such as job title, business sector, purchasing responsibility and size of company.
The cost for basic rental is pounds 155 per 1000, with additional selections charged at pounds 5 per thousand each. Call 020 8267 4964; or try VNU One-to-One, 020 7316 9390.
Q: We need an agency that can organise a catalogue distribution, ideally one based in the north of England.
A: LinkDirect is based in Merseyside and provides a full range of door-to-door services. Solus, or individual delivery, is ideal for targeted campaigns, particularly if you want the recipient to give full attention to your item.
If you want blanket coverage in a particular area it is more economical to go for shared distribution with the free newspaper networks, which LinkDirect can arrange for you.
The company quotes around pounds 12.50 per thousand for a typical shared distribution campaign and around pounds 35 per thousand for solus.
Some clients supply their own customer lists or areas they want to target, broken down into postcodes. But LinkDirect can help you with this, using data provided by Experian's Mosaic system. If your needs are relatively straightforward, such as identifying owner-occupied addresses, there will be no charge.
