Optical chain Specsavers is in talks about putting its name on the
shirts of English football referees.
The discussions follow the sport's governing body FIFA's decision to
relax the rules on referee sponsorship.
Specsavers, which has around 400 outlets around the UK, is talking to
the Football Association, FA Premier League and Referees' Association
about a potential tie-up, to begin next season.
A deal with Specsavers would be highly amusing to football fans who have
long-questioned the quality of referees' eyesight.
A spokeswoman for the chain said the consent of all three bodies would
be required, but that it was "actively pursuing" an agreement.
Specsavers is the leading multiple opticians' brand in the UK, with
around 25% of the market. Its main rivals are Boots Opticians, Dollond &
Aitchison and Vision Express.
