A survey of 1000 consumers by research agency Incite found that the only initiative getting through is the drive to encourage customers to re-use or bring their own bags.
The study questioned shoppers on Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Co-Op and Aldi. Some 58% consumers agreed that supermarkets were taking action on plastic bags but levels for other initiatives were much lower.
Only 24% believe supermarkets are actively reducing the amount of packaging on products while just 31% think there is enough information on recycling and making packaging recyclable.
Incite managing director Roger Banks said: ‘It is clear that consumers want to do more to help, but recycling needs to be made even more accessible to them, and the lead on this needs to come from industry.'
