From next season posters with the words ‘Some people are gay. Get over it!' will be displayed at rugby league grounds, in matchday programmes and fanzines.

The campaign, which begins in February, will reach nearly two million people who attend Super League matches each year as well as the 250,000 players across the country.

The RFL is also setting up a lesbian, gay and bisexual forum for staff and players.

According to the RFL, the decision was made following successful campaigns by clubs from Oldham and Salford which work with gay, lesbian and bisexual groups rather than concerns that rugby league fans or players were homophobic.
