The new service is likely to form an integral part of the brand's advertising and marketing strategy in 2009, according to a report in the Financial Times.
From tomorrow, members of the public, irrespective of whether they have an account with RBS, will be able to consult with customer service staff at branches on topics such as debt management.
The bank has trained around 1,000 customer service employees, in partnership with advice charity Consumer Credit Counselling Service, to help consumers with financial worries.
‘We are in the new world and we need to reposition ourselves - ‘helpful banking' is the direction I use in difficult times,' said Gordon Pell, chairman of regional markets at RBS.
Following October's £37bn Government bail-out for the UK's banking sector, taxpayers now own almost 60% of RBS.
