Duncan this week agreed to a 35% pay cut at Channel 4. His basic salary at the broadcaster is £670,000 per annum as well as a £225,000 payment every year under a long-term incentive plan.

The opening on the HMV board comes as senior independent director, Roy Brown, steps down on 22 April. Lesley Knox will take his role as well as acting as chairman of the remuneration committee.

The music and books retailer, which also owns the Waterstone's chain, launched into live venues this year. It is investing an initial £18.3m in a 50-50 joint venture with MAMA, the country's second-biggest operator of live music venues.
