Move to 'rebrand' swine flu to halt pork boycott

LONDON - US officials are attempting to rebrand 'swine flu' as the 2009 H1N1 virus over concerns that consumers may mistakenly boycott pork products.

Move to 'rebrand' swine flu to halt pork boycott

During a press briefing the US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said: 'We want to say to consumers here and abroad that there is no risk to you, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that there is any link between consuming pork, prepared pork products and the H1N1 virus.'

The move comes after a significant decline in the international prices of US pork. Countries including Russia and China have suspended pork imports from Mexico and some US states.

Experts have re-iterated there is no link at all between the consumption of pork and the virus. More than 150 people are suspected to have died of the virus in Mexico and the illness has since spread around the globe.

Agree that it is inaccurate to describe this as Swine flu when it sends such a negative \(and misleading) message about a food we regularly eat. Why can't they just call it flu \(epidemic)?

Suggest that we adopt the naming convention that meteorologists use for naming hurricanes etc. For those who don't know, they have a 'bank' of names, which are attributed to the newest whatever in rotation. That way we avoid the ‘food labeling’ problem.
