RE: Brand logic of Morrisons' interest in Iceland questioned

There may actually be two options for Morrisons here, both of which could be valid. The first is if Morrisons Group wants to operate different brands with different propositions but using the Morissons Group know how in buying and retailing to create a profitable business out of Iceland. The second is the integration of Iceland into Morrisons. Whilst I agree with Mr Prior that the brand fit may not be optimal and as such not considered and that the cost of the integration may be very high. But there are a number of key factors that should be considered, namely is Morrisons looking at the brand, a distinct skill set, a route to market or the real estate. As Jim points out the brand and the skill set are unlikely to be the driving factors for the interest but the route to market and real estate are critical - and both are intertwined. In retail we tend to be creatures of habit - walking or driving the same route to work, the gym or school and picking up our groceries or coffee en route. As such, these creatures of habit can be turned on to the Morrisons proposition. Ultimately Morrisons must believe that the footfall \(and potential footfall) of the Iceland retail estate is not being leveraged and is something that Morrisons can quickly and effectively do.
