RE: London 2012 set to be the 'biggest media event in history'

Saying an "estimated global audience of more than four billion viewers" I think is utterly misleading headline grabber and makes it sound like the vast majority of the world's population will sit glued to the Olympics. You're not alone in your view, according to nielsonwire, 4.7 billion people \(70% of the world's population they say) tuned in to watch the Beijing Olympics. I just don't buy these guesstimate figures dreamed up by event owners and sports media companies trying to attract sponsors. Something like 60 markets account for 90% of TV's owned that could reach, in theory, 75% of the global population. So to achieve 4 billion plus viewers, everyone, in every country needs to be watching the Olympics at some point. I remember FIFA's claim of over a billion viewers for the 2006 world cup was challenged as no more than 250 million. FIFA eventually climbed down on their claim, but then when the company compiling the original figures CEO is the nephew of Sepp Blatter you might expect some interesting numbers! So the Olympics - 4.7 billion+ viewers for the London games – no way.

RE: LOCOG readies marketing push for unsold Olympic football tickets

I agree with Mark too. If they go on sale twice and no-one bites, then give them away to local schools. Given the price of a football tickets nowadays, I doubt many children will have experienced a full-on live sports event.

RE: Newcastle FC renames stadium

Didn't Arsenal change when they moved grounds? Yes, but The Emirates has never been known as anything else. Same as Wigan with the DW. City have only just re-named to the Etihad, having formerly been The City of Manchester Stadium after their move from Maine Road. The problem here is, like you say, history. Plus, as Sue points out it is utterly chavtastic. I find it ridiculous that a sponsor is going to find the 'Sports Direct Arena' a more attractive prospect than one of the most recognisable names in English football.
