RE: Waitrose plots fashion launch to match rival supermarkets

One only has to visit a golf club to see that middle england, middle class, middle aged males don't really care what they wear. They will buy Waitrose 'casual slacks' by the trolley load.

RE: Waitrose plots fashion launch to match rival supermarkets

I think as they have already said they are moving into the high street with smaller stores, they are more gunning for the M&S customer in adding clothes to a grocery proposition, rather than cannibalising their own John Lewis business and JL fashion lines. If the fashion is sufficiently stylish, rather than fashionable, and of a superior quality in order to tempt customers across from M&S, they may have a chance. I really can't see anyone under 45 "wearing Waitrose" though. If they can appeal to the growing over-45 market with a clothing equivalent of their middle-England, good value, high quality produce with great customer service \(which is so lacking on the high street for younger brands) they may actually do rather well.

RE: Waitrose plots fashion launch to match rival supermarkets

I think this is a mistake. I'll tell you why. Many Waitrose customers choose and value the Waitrose shopping experience because it provides quality food, drink, and groceries ... and that's it! The customer enjoys not having to navigate additional aisles of clothes, DVD's, TV's, mobile phones and hordes of other people who have no interest in food shopping. Secondly, who will proudly wear Waitrose clothing? John Lewis card carrying advocates can already visit John Lewis stores if they yearn for the latest JL fashions. But many other Waitrose customers are likely to source their fashions elsewhere, and would a sufficient customer base make this a sustainable extension of the brand offering? For me, Waitrose customers buy into the unique positioning of Waitrose being a supermarket that's 'a food specialist and quality grocer'. Bigger stores and introduction of clothing lines, will potentially kill this positioning and the dynamic that juxtaposes Waitrose against the John Lewis Stores, and the separateness that exists \(and is valued) by its customers.

RE: Oddbins rescue fails and retailer enters administration

I never thought I would see the end of what was an institution for getting decent wine etc. The Supermarkets are very quickly taking control of everything in the retail sector which is rather depressing.
